THE INFLUENCE THE VOYAGES HAD ON THE LIFE OF THE ROYAL PRINCE

It was customary for young princes and members of the aristocracy to travel through Europe in order to gain new perspectives, broaden their views and knowledge of the world. It was somewhat of a rite of passage between adolescence and adulthood.

The Royal Prince was no exception. At the age of 16, and right after his mother’s passing, his father, King D. Fernando II, sent him on his first European travel aboard the Mindelo ship, with England as his first destination.

The things he saw filled him with hope and wonder, as his mind started to race with endless possibilities. He kept a detailed record of everything he saw and heard, never ceasing to compare it with Portugal.

This room captures the influences of an 18th century Europe, as seen by the keen eyes of a young Prince, soon to be King.
